Cromolyn sodium

Before using cromolyn sodium nasal spray
Before using this medicine, tell your doctor:
If you are allergic to cromolyn sodium
If you are taking other medicines
If you have any of the following health problems:
  • Polyps, nasal
  • Hepatic function impairment
  • Renal function impairment

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

It is not known whether cromolyn sodium passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Direction
Blow your nose so that your nostrils are clear. Take the lid off the bottle. Tilt your head slightly forward. Close one nostril by gently pressing against the side of your nose with your finger. Insert the tip of the nasal spray into the other nostril. Press down on the canister as you begin to breathe in slowly through your nose. While you are still breathing in squirt one spray into the nostril keeping the bottle upright. Repeat this procedure for the other nostril. Replace the lid on the bottle.



Dosage and administration

Allergic rhinitis, seasonal (prophylaxis)

  • Usual adult and adolescent dose: 1 spray in each nostril four times a day at regular intervals of four to six hours
  • Children up to 5 years of age: Use and dose must be determined by doctor.
  • Usual geriatric dose: such as usual adult and adolescent dose
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of cromolyn, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Side/ Adverse effects
In addition to its needed effects, some unwanted effects may be caused by cromolyn nasal. In the event that any of these side effects do occur, they may require medical attention.

Incidence more frequent
  • Burning, stinging, or irritation inside of nose
  • Increase in sneezing
Incidence less frequent
  • headache
  • postnasal drip
  • unpleasant taste
Incidence rare
  • coughing; difficulty in swallowing; hives; itching of skin; swelling of face, lips, or eyelids; wheezing or difficulty in breathing
  • nosebleeds
  • skin rash
Storage
  • Store the medicine below 30°C in a tightly closed container, away from light. Protect from freezing.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
